It gained three stars in the Michelin Guide in 2007 and is also known as the mountain with the most climbers in the world.

Inside the ticket gate of Takaosanguchi Station

  • There are 13 clean toilets for women
  • There may be queues on weekends and holidays. If you’re short on time during crowded periods, it’s recommended to use the toilets outside the ticket gate (public parking lot).

  • Even when the station toilets are crowded, these toilets are relatively available.
  • Its 2minute walk from the Takaosanguchi Station ticket gate.

Cable Car Station – Kiyotaki

  • Although it’s often relatively available, it can also get crowded during peak seasons.
  • There are 4 Western-style and 4 Japanese-style toilets (one of which has a baby seat).
  • There’s also a washroom, which can be used for changing clothes or washing your face after descending.

Summit Cable Car Station

  • There are two Western-style and four Japanese-style toilets for women.

  • Located on the left side facing the lift platform.

Toilet at Yakuo-in Temple

  • Located down the slope near the shop that sells Yakuo-in’s amulets and talismans.
  • There is a slight slope, so it may be a little inconvenient for people with walking disabilities.
  • There are 5 clean Western-style toilets for women (including one with a baby chair).

Toilet below the summit

  • A large public toilet resembling a mountain hut.
  • A green light indicates an empty restroom, a red light indicates an occupied restroom.

Next to the Mt. Takao Visitor Center

  • It’s a bit tucked away but clean and convenient to use.
  • There are 4 individual Western-style stalls for women.

Momiji dai (about 10 minutes walk from the summit of Mt. Takao)

  • There are two Japanese-style toilets, separated by gender.
  • There is a Momiji Chaya there. In addition to meals, you can also enjoy alcoholic beverages such as beer and sours.
  • Momiji Chaya is generally open on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. If you’re lucky, it’s sometimes open on sunny weekdays.

Icchoudaira-Enchi

  • Located midway between Mt. Takao and Shiro-yama (about 40 minutes from the summit of Mt. Takao).
  • It is located between Mt. Takao and Mt. Shiroyama (about 40 minutes from the summit of Mt. Takao).
  • There are two Western-style toilets for men and women.
  • Please dispose of used paper in the trash as it cannot be flushed down the toilet.

Mt. Shiro-yama

  • Shiro-yama’s altitude is 670 meters.
  • It takes about 70 minutes to walk from the summit of Mt. Takao using the standard course time.
  • There are two tea houses at the summit (usually open on weekends and holidays, and might open on sunny days from spring to autumn).
  • In summer, you can enjoy shaved ice. Cup noodles and drinks are also available for sale.
  • Climbing attire and shoes are necessary for the hike from Mt. Takao to Shiro-yama.
  • There’s no place to wash your hands after using the toilet, so you need to prepare wet tissues or similar items yourself.

By train

The nearest station to Mt. Takao is Takaosanguchi Station on the Keio Line.

① Keio Line
  • Time required: About 50~60 minutes from Shinjuku to Takaosanguchi
  • Fare: From Shinjuku Station to Takaosanguchi Station(430 yen)
② JR Chuo Line

Time required:

  • About 50~60 minutes from Shinjuku to Takao
  • 3 minutes from Takao Station to Takaosanguchi Station

Fare: From Shinjuku Station to Takao Station(580 yen) From Takao Station to Takaosanguchi Station(140 yen)

Do you want to sit on the train?

If you prefer to sit on the train, you can ride the reserved seat limited express [Mount Takao] between Shinjuku Station and Takaosanguchi Station for an additional 410 yen. This is especially recommended after taking a hot spring.

Tickets for Mt. Takao can be purchased online or at ticket vending machines at stations.
